Opera and Birds

Indulging in my lifelong habit of listening to the Saturday radio broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera.  Today is “Rigoletto” by Verdi . . . my basement office has windows, two of which give me a wonderful view of our bird feeders so I’m watching the cardinals, juncos, titmice, sparrows, nuthatches, red-bellied woodpecker, mourning doves.  Sophie was here last week and excitedly spotted a red-tailed hawk sitting on a low branch of the beech tree by the feeders  . . . just as we realized what the hawk was up to, i.e., the danger to the small birds at the feeder, a blue jay swooped down, pecked the hawk on the head, which sent it flying away–high drama for me and Sophie!
