One of my coping strategies is mentally naming allies I know across the country—Martha in California, Diana in New York, Annie in Ohio, Ann in Massachusetts, Dave in West Virginia, Dot in Florida . . .
I am also returning to my book The Vote: Women's Fierce Fight for wisdom and inspiration. This morning I recalled November 1915 when a woman suffrage referendum was on the ballot in four states—New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York.
All were defeated.
In response, Carrie Chapman Catt, president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) issued a battle cry in a letter to state presidents of NAWSA's affiliates—
"There are enough of us to give them no rest if we 'get together' and pull together. It is worth it."
