This statue of Sojourner Truth is in Florence, Massachusetts, a factory town founded by members of the Northampton Association of Education and Industry, a utopian community of people who believed in equality. She lived in a home she bought
, which is still standing. Florence is where she dictated her story, “The Narrative of Sojourner Truth,” to a neighbor that was published in 1850. Note the flower offerings in my photograph; it’s not uncommon, I’ve discovered, for visitors to leave tokens of appreciation.
