The other two statues in the Boston Women’s Memorial depict Lucy Stone and Abigail Adams. Stone once said: “Now all we need is to continue to speak the truth fearlessly, and we shall add to our number those who will turn the scale to the side of equal and full justice in all things.”
The inscription on the statue reads: “The legal right for woman to record her opinions wherever opinions count is the tool for whose ownership we ask.” Abigail Adams wrote in a letter to her husband John, who was working on writing the U.S. Constitution: “If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice, representation.”
The U.S. Constitution was adopted in 1789. Women finally won the right to vote 133 years later.
